Be a Hammerhead Shark

Looking for work is one of the hardest things to do .when you weighed down by bills and worries about the providing for the family Your mind gets stuck In the present.  You are tossed about by waves of need.  As the days and weeks past, you can only see that the waves keep washing away any money you do get. The amount that you are in the hole keeps growing.   You start thinking, “What’s the use.”  You start walking with your head a bit lower.  The worry can be seen in your eyes.

While you are feeling so down, successful job hunting needs a person who is enthusiastic, upbeat and self-confident.  The last thing a prospective employer wants  to know is how “needy” you are.  A frowner almost never gets the job.  Now I know being upbeat and confident  seems impossible when there is that mountain staring you in the face.  But there are things you can do to start swimming and stop treading water.  Yes, you can even start surfing!

Getting Ready
Employers don’t want to see or hear the word “anything” as the answer to “What can you do?”  To get ready to answer that question, sit down at a quiet time to do some writing.  Start writing down all the things you can do as fast as you can.  Try to get a list of 25 things.  Don’t worry if things you write seem alike.  For example:

- good with kids
- can balance a checkbook
- I can keep things organized
- I can do stuff on the computer
- people like to talk with me

Put the list away for a day.  When you take it out again, see if you can add any more things.  Do this for the next 3 days.  Watch the list grow.  You will start to see that you can some very neat (and “work-able”) things.

Take the list and write down the name of the job skill next to each item on your list.  You may have more than one per item. For example:

- good with kids  >   teacher’s assistant, day care work, crossing guard, mother’s helper.
- I can keep things organized > sales clerk, clerk, office assistant, billing

Be creative.  Look in the want ads for key words that match you list.

Start Looking Where Others Aren’t

A hammerhead shark’s eyes look to the sides and not straight ahead.  While most people look for work from the normal things like the want ads, you be like a hammerhead shark.  Read the bulletin boards at the grocery stores.   Check out the job postings in your town hall and post office.   Make a list of all the businesses in your area and then see if they have a web site.  Most places that have a site list  job openings.  Look for the words “careers,” “employment”, “jobs “ or “openings” on the home page.  Include any schools, hospitals, churches, charities,  colleges, and trade schools in your search.  Also look at sites like craigslist.org.

If you find a match with your skills, fill out the application.

And good luck, you hammerhead shark you!

What's on your heart and mind today?

Sometimes life IS like a box of chocolates.  There are times when every piece you bite into is one of those nasty jellies.

But there are those delicious creams in the same box.  And who knows, maybe we can find a way to turn those jellies into pieces of  deliciousness.

Don't get discouraged.  Keep looking for the way out.  You will see your path when you least experct it.

I know What the Answer Is Now

I never thought that one day I would know the real answer to “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”  It was one of those questions that was on those annual review forms.  Typically, one was expected to respond by hitting the high points.  How it was a great company to grow your career.  To continue to contribute to the corporate growth and profitability.  To continue to serve in any capacity that was mutually beneficial to the corporation and to me. Over a period of time, my answer became clear.  “Disabled.”

Perilymph fistula.  A somewhat rare condition that compromises the inner ear’s balance organs.  There is almost constant nausea, the gait of a drunken sailor, and increased distressed when bending over.   It also causes the eyes to “flicker” making reading for more than 20 minutes difficult.  Anything that raises blood pressure or vibrates neck and head, sends one to lying down.

It is so easy to become discouraged.  But I chose to fight.  I call other shut ins.  I have become a “listening ear” for people who have been downsized or who are undergoing an involuntary career transition.  Unfortunately, these folks are also in economic distress.  Income goes to the essentials.  They can’t afford to pay for moral support.  We all have slipped through the safety net.  We don’t want to be there.  I’m sure that if we could regain out financial footing, with a bit of outside help, we could once again become assistance givers and not  receivers.

About DepressedN'dizzy

I never thought I would be in this position.

I am on Social Security disability.  I lost the private disability income that was 75% of my income.  My physical condition has become worse.

Yesterday, I used the last of my savings to pay for the past due on my Medicare  suppliment  health insurance.

I have been without running water in the house because there is a leaking pipe in a wall and I couldn't pay my water bill.  The neighbor who mowed my lawn moved  and I just can't afford anyone to help me.  Tree limbs are down and one is leaning on my roof.  Other minor repaies are just not getting done.

I've been in bankrupcy since last July.  I have to make that payment or I'll lose the house.

And the kicker is that my "income"  ms $200 over eligability limits.  When I bought my house about 7 years ago, my mortgage payment was equal to what I was paying for rent.  My supplimental insurance payment is almost equal to my mortgage payment.

I used to  be a giver, and that is the hardest part.  I can't do that any more.

Any resource information or some angel who can help, please post.

I live in Osage County Oklahoma.
